The Classic Jaguar XK140
The Jaguar XK140, produced between 1954 and 1957, was a refined successor to the legendary XK120. It offered a blend of enhanced performance, comfort, and updated styling. Among its variants, the Drophead Coupe (DHC) stood out as a luxurious open-top tourer. The 1957 model year represented the culmination of the XK140's evolution, embodying the best of its features.
Design and Features
The XK140 DHC showcased elegant lines with a long hood, sweeping fenders, and a graceful profile. Compared to the XK120, it had a more substantial and modern look, with a revised grille, larger bumpers, and integrated indicators. The DHC variant featured a fully lined convertible top that folded neatly behind the seats, providing a more refined and weather-resistant experience than the roadster's removable canvas top.
Inside, the XK140 DHC boasted a luxurious cabin with plush leather upholstery, a walnut-veneered dashboard, and comfortable seating for two, with occasional rear seats suitable for children or extra luggage. The dashboard was redesigned with improved ergonomics and a more organized layout.
Performance and Engineering
The heart of the XK140 was Jaguar's renowned 3.4-liter XK inline-6 engine, a masterpiece of engineering. In standard form, it produced 190 horsepower, but the DHC could also be ordered with the optional "C-Type" cylinder head, boosting power to 210 horsepower. This engine delivered exhilarating performance, propelling the car to a top speed of over 120 mph.
The XK140 featured a robust chassis with independent front suspension and a live rear axle. It also introduced rack-and-pinion steering, a significant improvement over the XK120's steering system. Braking was handled by four-wheel drum brakes, providing reliable stopping power.
